FORMERLY KNOWN AS WOMEN BETWEEN ARTS

New Website in Progress...

"A Potentially Paradigm-Shifting Series of Women Performers at the New School."

"Rapturous Musical Cross-Pollination at Women Between Arts at the New School."

"How do you market something that resists easy categorization? Maybe by calling it what it is: outside the box. Considering the turnout, there definitely is an audience for what might be the only interdisciplinary series focusing on women performers whose work encompasses so many different idioms in New York right now."

"[...] When Muhr springboarded the project, she’d assumed that Women Between Arts would be one of at least five or six ongoing programs here. But this seems to be the only one at the moment."

"[...] In pushing the boundaries of diverse idioms, a program like Muhr’s has the potential to spur the growth of new synapses for both audiences and performers."

"One would think that there would be several series in this city devoted to women whose work crosses the line between different artistic disciplines, but this appears to be the only one at present. What’s new with Muhr’s series is that it isn’t just a place for women artists who defy categorization: it’s also a space where adventurous established artists can branch out beyond their usual practice."

– Alan Young (New York Music Daily, Lucid Culture)

ABOUT BETWEEN THE ARTS

Between the Arts (FKA Women Between Arts) is New York’s leading interdisciplinary womxn and non-binary artists series, created and curated by multi- and interdisciplinary artist Luisa Muhr at The New School, College of Performing Arts.

Revolving around the question: "How do we make new art?", the series has been mostly operating as a one-woman-run project with a small body of fellow volunteer team members since it was founded in October 2017. Due to the pandemic public programming has been on hold since January 2021 in order to focus on rebuliding the series, for which purpose former team member Marisa Tornello re-joined in Spring 2023.

Between the Arts has featured some of today's most exciting experimental artists who identify as womxn or non-binary people and their groups/ensembles/collaborators (including people of all genders and non-binary people), who work with any combination of music/sound, theater, dance/movement, poetry, performance art, installation, film and/or visual arts in an unconventional way. Each event features three womxn/non-binary artists and/or their groups and a talk-back after the sets where audience members have the opportunity to engage with the artists.

Muhr’s mission is to provide a platform for and encourage dialogue between strong, diverse womxn/non-binary artists, often to be found in the avant-garde/experimental, who push boundaries and work "between" disciplines. Between the Arts was in residence (as Women Between Arts) at Pioneer Works with founder Luisa Muhr in April 2019.

Between the Arts is produced by FENGARI Works. The series follows the code of conduct of We Have Voice. Many thanks to John Zorn and Richard Kessler (Executive Dean of the College of Performing Arts) for their encouragement and support. And our deepest gratitude to Rachel Housle, House Manager at Mannes School of Music who has been with us from the very start.

TESTIMONIALS

"Keep doing what you do. [...] We women have to stick together."
– Meredith Monk (interdisciplinary artist), audience member

"I ran a series in Midtown from 1993-2007. But keeping a new music series together in Manhattan is an even greater contribution than it was years ago."
–Tom Hamilton (director, producer), audience member

"The history of music (classical American or European music, rock and more) twisted by Y chromosome is such a history of lies and omissions it should include an equal amount of empty pages for all the names and musics denied access. Thanks for filling in some blanks Luisa. I really do appreciate it."
– Julie Ezelle Patton, featured artist

"I have a whole bus ride to process the three beautifully wild and moving performances that I became immersed in this evening. Thanks to these artists, I feel like my world has shifted a bit."
– Leora Pedersen, audience member
